PE

As usual, the children swim at Chadderton baths every Thursday morning. They will need a swimming bag with a towel and trunks (boys) or a swimming costume (girls). Long hair must be tied back with a bobble and jewellery must not be worn on PE days, which are Mondays and Thursdays.

Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school. We recommend that they keep it in school for the full half term.

 

Reading books

Many children now have the opportunity, as free readers, to change their home reading book during our regular school library visit every Thursday morning. A record is kept of which book your child has borrowed. Please could you make sure your child has their book in school ready for changing every Thursday. If they wish to keep their book for a further week, this will be recorded.

 

Some children will continue to use levelled reading books and they will be encouraged to change their books every Monday morning.

 

Please refer to the list of questions provided in your child’s book bag should you wish to ask relevant questions during your child’s reading to support comprehension.

 

We encourage and welcome comments from parents/carers as this helps us greatly.

 

Curriculum – What will children be learning this half term?

English

Debating – expressing opinions and creating a balanced argument about topical issues.

Big Question - How far would I go to look cool? Creating newspaper reports.

Recapping key Year 3 Grammar learning.

Maths

Fractions – finding fractions of amounts. Problem solving involving the 4 operations (+,-,x,÷). Time – calculating duration of events. Measuring – using scales.

Science

Plants – What they need to survive.

RE / PSHCE

Rules for Living – Other faiths. We will focus on the religions; Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Sikhism and Hinduism.

Computing

We will be using ‘Purple Mash’ to develop and improve our typing skills.

History / Geography

Our new history unit is India where we will learn about its geographical make up and ways of life.

Art / Design

Designing, creating and decorating clay models of animals linked to India.

PE

Swimming and athletics including improving our running techniques, jumping skills, passing and catching techniques as well as preparing for Sports Day.

Music

We will focus on beat, identifying metre and rhythm in pieces of music.

How can parents help?

General

  • Daily reading and questioning to check and support understanding.
  • Accessing the websites listed below.
  • Providing a quiet area for homework.
  • Regular visits to the library. Giving children the opportunity to select their own books encourages a love of reading and allows them to explore their own interests.

 

Maths

  • Practising times tables, especially 3’s, 4’s and 8’s.
  • Telling the time to the nearest minute and working out the passage of time. For example: The film started at 9:05 and finished at 11:15. How long did it last?
  • Using and handling money. Working out change.
  • Baking – weighing and measuring amounts using kg and g, litres and ml.

English

  • Re-enforcing the consistent and accurate use of capital letters and full stops when writing anything and everything.
  • Encouraging slow and careful handwriting whenever your child is writing.
  • Reading their writing back to themselves so that it makes sense.
  • Writing stories/non-fiction booklets for pleasure.
