Sports Blog 26th March 2018
This half term, the children have been busy in PE lessons, as well as in after school competitions.
In Years 1 and 2, the children have been creating their own dances.
Year 1 dances were based around marching smartly like real soldiers and like toy soldiers. The children had to put together their own short sequences and be able to repeat them. There were some amazing ideas going on.
Year 2 explored cat like movements and created their own short sequences to show what a day in the life of a cat was like. The children worked really well to show the contrasts between the slow movements a cat uses to stalk its prey and the quick movements they might use when chasing their prey.
Year 3 have been very busy in their swimming lessons and have been working hard to achieve their Level 3 certificates, as well as their Key Stage 2 certificates, which show that they are able to meet national standards in swimming. Amazing. We also have a large number of children who are working on their personal survival skills – fantastic work by all in Year 3.
Year 4 and Year 5 have been working hard on tennis skills and also taking part in multi skills lessons, where they have the opportunity to practise skills and drills that they can use in a range of different sports.
Year 6 have been working on orienteering skills and have been working on skills on team work and co-operation, as well as understanding map symbols.
Out of school events and competitions
On February 27th, the Year 4 and 5 swimmers took part in a competition at Oldham Sports centre. The boys and girls teams swam brilliantly and finished in 2nd place. They were incredible in such a very strong field of swimmers. Excellent performances and attitudes from every single one of the children.
After a long break for the winter the runners came back strong. On the 17th March the first meet in 5 months proved successful for St Matthews with a gold and two silvers.
The boys badminton team took part in a competition at The Radclyffe School on 21st March. The boys played a number of singles and double matches and going into the final game, they were level pegging with Bare Trees on overall points. The final game was a thriller and finished 7-6 to Bare Trees, meaning they won the competition by 1 point!
Mr Finc at The Radclyffe, who organised the event emailed after the event to compliment the boys. He said “I was really impressed with your students’ skill level and enthusiasm for the game!” Excellent feedback, well done boys!
The Year 5 and 6 swimmers took part in their league meetings on the 15th and 22nd March at Chadderton Pool. They all swam brilliantly and out of 32 races, came 1st in 30 of them! The swimmers retained the girls and boys trophies for another year and were a credit to the school and their families with their behaviour and attitudes. Amazing swimming. We are so proud of you all.
Sport Relief Week and the Daily Mile
The children participated in Sport Relief week (19th – 23rd March) and during PE lessons, they learned some lacrosse skills. For most of the children, it was the first time they had ever played the game and they were incredible!
The children have also started the Daily Mile and are really embracing the extra exercise! Even the staff were involved!!
