Half-termly Class Newsletter

Class: Year One 1MB/1FB

Date: 8h November 2019

General Information / Upcoming Events

We are very proud of the children having completed their first half term in Year 1. We are looking forward to many more exciting learning opportunities during the next half term.

PE will be taught on Wednesdays and we also have an additional session with a coach from Manchester City on Thursdays.

Please note that long hair must be tied back with a bobble and any jewellery/earrings must not be worn.  Thank you for your support with this.

Please could you ensure your child has their full PE kit in school. We recommend that they keep it in school for the full half term.

Reading Books

Children will have an individual reading book and record book that will come home every day.

If your child has read their book, they can place it in the box on our desks and it will be changed.

We do ask that your child does not change their reading book too frequently as one of the Year 1 objectives is to build up reading fluency by re-reading texts.

Curriculum – What will children be learning this half term?

The children will be exploring different fiction and non-fiction texts linked to the theme of seasonal changes. We will be using different texts, including ’Percy the Park Keeper’ and ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson. The children will continue to develop their vocabulary and writing skills by orally composing sentences before writing them down. We will be making predictions about stories and orally retelling them through role play.

We are currently learning about addition and subtraction, and are learning lots of different strategies to support our mathematical understanding. We will be using the comparison signs to compare amounts and calculations, and will go on to recognise and understand the difference between tens and ones through learning about place value of numbers up to 20.

Changing seasons

Harvest in other faiths. Christmas – why do we give and receive gifts?

How can parents help?

We are always grateful for your support and involvement throughout the year. Helping your child with their homework weekly will be much appreciated as the homework set is there to embed the concepts we have learnt throughout the week. We ask that you read with your child at home as frequently as possible and make brief comments in their reading record book to indicate that the book has been read. We would also request that you ask your child frequently to practise reading the tricky word sets on the slip stuck in the front of their reading record book. As always we value the support from parents and the community in school, if there are any parents that would like to volunteer to come into school and listen to readers please could you let me know and we will arrange it where possible. Unfortunately it will not be possible to place you in your child’s class but another class will be allocated to you.
