Autumn Week 7 2018

We have continued to enjoy singing and making music. Our knowledge of pulse and rhythm is really coming on and we can keep the pulse on percussion instruments and on the glockenspiels. We have been clapping and playing lots of rhythms. We are beginning to look at pitch and tempo and we are learning lots of action songs and rhymes to help us with this.

To progress our work around colour we have been inspired by Piet Mondrian to create some primary colour pictures. We have also mixed tones and shades of different colours and are beginning to understand the effect that colour mixing can achieve. We have also taken some time to create some poppies for a Remembrance Day display.

We continue to explore R&B music and have been learning to harmonise our voices and work together as a class choir. We are becoming more confident playing the glockenspiels and we are enjoying exploring the new notes we can play.

Y4 have been experimenting with different grades of pencils to see what effects they can create using hatching and lines. The children continue to play their instruments weekly with Mrs Howarth from Oldham Music Service and she is really very impressed by them!

We have been working on singing as a team and our performance during music lessons and we have really seen the difference in how we sound! We have continued to play the glockenspiels and have been learning to compose short pieces. As the half term draws to a close we are having a few lessons looking at WW1 and WW2 music, linking in with History lessons.

Our drawing skills and confidence have really improved. We continue to look at ‘Moving Figures’ and have explored lots of avenues that artists may use to create movement in pictures. We have all designed, created and coloured an Angel picture that will be used in a corridor display. We used paint, oil pastels and charcoal to create effects.

Autumn Week 4

We are excited to be working with Trinity Collage London and Curious Minds as we embark on our Arts Mark journey. This week we have registered to become an Arts Award centre and look forward to more children gaining discover level Arts Awards. More information on Arts Mark and Arts Awards can be found at and

We have had a busy start to the new academic year with the Y1 children embarking on a Rap Music unit of work, we have listened to songs and identified the instrument we could hear and we are thinking about the differences between rapping and singing.

Year 2 have been looking at primary colours and we have learnt that these are the colours that we cannot mix or make using other colours. The children had the opportunity to draw and colour in their favourite things in the primary colours.

In Year 3 we are looking at R&B music this half term, we will look at different artists and appraise their work. We will be learning to sing and play the glockenspiel alongside the song Let Your Spirit Fly.

Year 4 will continue to learn to play either flutes or clarinets taught by Miss Howarth from Oldham Music Service.

We have had a good start to a Rock music unit of work, looking at Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi in Year 5. We will be appraising different Rock artists and learning to play instruments alongside the music.

In Year 6 we started an Art unit of work called ‘People in Motion’. We had a go at drawing moving people and then looked at using ovals to sketch parts of the body in proportion.
